Upin,a photojournalist,is sent to Purulia to cover a story on the exploitation of tribals.There he comes across a tribal woman called "Gangor" who he thinks is the epitome of ancient Indian beauty.He shoots pictures of her while she is breast feeding her child.The picture then appears in the newspaper,in an article written by Upin ,on the crimes against tribal woman in rural areas.What happens in their respective lives after this article ,forms the crux of the story.The film unravels with migrant labourer ,Gangor's beauty that exites the attention of the ace photographer and becomes the object of obsession and oppression,triggering off a chain of violent events that end in tragedy.
The story depicts the internal trauma of a liberal urbane photographer who unwittingly,becomes part of the very violence he wishes to end.
The film was shot in the district of Purulia,a seven hour drive from Kolkata,towards the north.It is a district "haunted" as they say by the Naxalites in India.The people of Purulia are are some of the oldest ethnic groups and amongst them the Kheria Sabars,who lived in remote forests,from which they drew their food by hunting ,roots,fruits and honey.Notified by the British in 1871,as a community of Theives,they have become itinerant work force,with the forests being destroyed in our rampant urge for industrializationand our hunger for land.Amongst them ,the women are specialy vulnerable as they work as seasonal workers,employed mostly in the construction,paid a pittance and exploited
sexually.
